Background: The first project of this course dealt with giving us as students an introduction to the unity software and the htc vive to kick start a virtual and augmented reality study. It was an inside out setup wherein we created basic models and interacted with them in a classroom setup that was portrayed in the virtual environment. The second project, which many of my fellow classmates would agree to, was challenging. It required us not just to build on what we learnt about Unity and VIVE interactions from the first project but also to dive into all the details of how to get the VIVE’s controllers and the overall tracking working and got us critically thinking on how to satisfy the project requirements. Some of us succeeded within that time frame while others could only satisfy the minimums. As a group for the third project, we wanted to build something that uses our prior knowledge and is related to what we’ve already learnt from earlier projects, assignments, and class theory. We could’ve chosen to work on Augmented Reality because we haven’t touched upon it much but the timespan of a month and the hardships of learning something new (although related) kept us from doing AR so we stuck to what we know best: VR! Why VR? + The main reason why we chose VR for this game is to take advantage of the fact that the user will have the illusion of reality while playing it; this will add up to the user having an immersive experience. + The user can walk around normally, use physical movements such leaning to the right or left to react in the game (dodging arrows) or press the physical wand trigger to shoot something. In case of normal keyboard games, the user has to map actions like pressing the right arrow to the game character moving right or clicking for jumping etc. and this functionality is limited, whereas in VR he/she can perform the actual physical actions and see that they are reflected/used directly in the game. + In VR gaming, we have the ability to give the player the feeling of limitless environment while using a bounded space in the real world (Fish Tank VR).
